Deep Technology

The word “start-up” has gained popularity in the past decades, more and more people have the dream of creating a multi-million-dollar company. Examples of such companies are Google, Amazon, Facebook, Uber, etc. These companies are also commonly known as technology or “tech” companies, Swati Chaturvedi, CEO of Propel(x) begs to differ. Ms. Chaturvedi argues that these companies rely on a technology previously invented, the internet, and are just generating value with a business model innovation. She mentions that there are other types of start-ups bringing real technology in their value proposition but cannot be put together with these tech companies. Therefore, the term “Deep-Tech” is employed.

Deep Tech companies or start-ups are organizations employing strong “scientific discoveries and/or engineering innovation”, therefore the term “deep”. It needs to be mentioned that Intellectual Property (IP) plays a critical roll on the value of these start-ups. The technologies proposed provide world-changing solutions to important problems like global warming, plastic contamination, antibiotic resistance, space traveling, etc. These solutions can come from different disciplines as mentioned by the CEO of Propel(x), these could be the life sciences, energy, clean technology, computer sciences, materials and chemical sciences. It is important to back up these ventures with resources in order to make the future arrive faster.

The term “Deep Tech” has its own community around it. The Hello Tomorrow event is a yearly global summit and competition for deep tech start-ups. This year it will take place in Paris, France on March. We can expect more events like this to arise thanks to these organizations gaining popularity. As a deep tech start-up, we at Nitrocel Technologies are happy to see a space and a community for companies like ours.
