The Magic Properties of the Blood

Have you ever experienced a broken bone? Any of your 206 bones? According to the World Health Organization, each year an estimated 646 000 individuals die from falls globally of which over 80% are in low- and middle-income countries. WHO also states that adults older tan 65 years of age suffer the greatest number of fatal falls and that 37.3 million falls that are severe enough to require medical attention occur each year.

Normally, medical treatments for broken bones need an investment of approximately $30,000 USD. For this reasons, scientist Benjamin Alman and his group of researchers, have investigated possible treatments for hip fractures. They found that blood infusion from a young donor to an old patient improves fracture healing. This technique was proved in young and old mice, giving positive results.

But, how does blood affect healing? Well, research has shown that macrophages have an important role in this. These cells secrete repair-promoting factors. One especially interesting factor identified by the scientists is low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 1 (Lrp1). This discovery brings forward the use of Lrp1 as a drug to accelerate fracture healing. This will make broken bones treatments more affordable and less aggressive.

The current understanding on aging and age-related diseases is precarious. Notable research has been made in the past, and we are getting a better understanding on how to stay healthy and with better life quality. As in this case with the macrophages, cell therapy shows promise in this endeavor. Our goal is to help make it more accessible for everyone.
